Reno- Inking with a brush 101

Description

First off, is it cool to put this in comic strips, since this is where it'll apply most?

OK... This is the first part to my inking tutorial. If you have ANY questions, note me and I'll try to get back to you as soon as possible.

Technical jargon- I ink with a #2 sable hair brush. The best brands are either Raphael Kolinsky or Windsor & Newton. Black drawing ink... And I use bristol paper. There are 2 types: Vellum, which is a rough surface, and smooth, which is smooth. Test them out, see what you like best.

Part 1: Straight lines- The second hardest part of inking with a brush is getting a nice straight smooth line. It doesn't have to be perfect, since inking with a brush is used mostly for organic and free-flowing materials. Start out with somewhat small lines so you don't have to raise your hand off the page, then longer lines to practice connecting them.

Part 2: Curves Without Value- Once you master circles, the inking process gets SO much easier. First I want you to ink with one line-weight because... well it's more difficult. Curves with uniform line-weight demand much more precision and therefore needs more skill. This will be the hardest part of learning to ink, I think.

Part 3: Curves with value- This is the beauty of the brush. Almost a calligraphic feel to the lines. Of course, the thicker the line, the more shadow will seem cast on it. I'll talk about light sources later on, but right now just draw curves starting with a thin line and thicken it. Then reverse, with the thick part first and shrink to the thin.

I've also put a sketch of an eye and hair to give an example of what a finished inking could look like. Remember, I've been inking with a brush for 5 years now and I've only become happy with the look recently.

Again, any questions at all can be sent to me through notes. I hope you enjoy this first part. :) (Smile)
